okay I'm soooo happy to say that m audio sent me back a new unit and the digital static i was experiencing (see delta 1010 woes - recent topic) is gone. so that is awesome since i put up with it for almost 6 months.
now I'm trying to use my WD 80gb sata drive to record to and I'm getting pop/click with audio recorded to it. if i record to the primary os/app drive, and ide drive, the issue is resolved.
I'm using an asus A7N8X-E mobo with a silicon image SiL3112 sata/raid chipset.
anyone have any tips of resolving this issue?

Several things can be happening.
At least, check the configuration at the Motherboard´s BIOS to see if everything is OK for the SATA controller, like DMA config, and data rate speeds. If you have just 1 SATA drive, then, disable any channel that you are not using. Check also if there´s any RAID enabled to that SATA controller and disable it.
In windows, check for virtual memory settings (in control panel>system>advanced options). Also, look in control panel>system>hardware>device manager and look if your SATA controller its properly installed, check for any conflicts that might be happening or missing drivers (you should know that a yellow icon in some device means a problem)
If you are running Protools LE, disable HT (hyper-threading) if you have a Pentium 4 processor (i guess your board is for AMD processor, so forget about this one)
Format your SATA drive to have NTFS partition instead of FAT32.
Look in your recording software wich hard disk is used for temp files, and change it just to make a test.
There are a lot of "dirty tricks" to optimize PCs performance for audio tasks, let us know if these suggestions did help you so we can give you more ideas...
