I'm pretty new with all this (recording, mixing etc.) and was wondering if there are any certain books anyone can recommend to me for getting started in general recording, mixing, compression, mastering. I've been looking around, mostly on Amazon and there are so many, it'd be good to have someone point me in the right direction.

At present, I am reading Mixing Audio by Roey Izhaki, Mastering Audio by Bob Katz, and The Mastering Engineer's Handbook by Bobby Owsinski. The first two have very good reviews, and for good reason. The Owsinski book is fine too, but if I could only choose one mastering book, it would be Katz for its greater detail.

The Ishaki book on mixing is very thorough, and quite current, but it seems to be geared only to what happens behind the desk and in the control room, and there might be better books out there that treat tracking proper (i.e., the meat and potatoes of instruments, mic selection, positioning, etc.) a bit more comprehensively. It also comes with an accompanying DVD with scores of audio samples of just about every possible audio effect, although I have yet to explore them. I want to get through the text once first, and then I will reread it while listening to the clips.
