Micing acoustic guitar in a music hall
Hi all, my roommate is a solo acoustic guitarist and recently got a job at a local music hall which sounds very, very good. His bosses said they would let him record in there, and I am writing to ask about techniques and mic suggestions for such a setup.

Micing 4x12 cabs
I am having a hard time getting a good distortion recording out of my 4x12 cab. It seems like there is to much extra noise I cant get that nice warm, thick, defined distortion that you hear on pro recordings. I am using a sm57 with octopre preamps. Does anybody have any advice how to clean up my dist. problem. Can I clean it up with better eqin of compression.? Help :D

Micing my Upright Piano...Good Mic recommendations?
Hello, I am new here and wanted some good advice for a MIcrophone to hook up my upright Piano. I am in a recording school right now but won't be in the good classes for atleast a few more months. I want so start laying down tracks NOW! So I know I probably want a condensor Mic. A good one that will get a good full recording. My budget for a Mic is around $400.
Earthworks and Double Micing
Two quick questions:
1. I've read a lot about double Micing guitar cabs...specifically, I've heard a lot about close Micing with a Shure 57 and Micing about six feet away with another mic.
My question is: do you use a Shure and another mic, and if so, what other mic do you use? Are there better alternatives to the 57?

direct connection from a head alternative to Micing cab
i have a band coming in, i was wondering if any body knew how i could just connect an amp head direct to the house then to a track on the computer... my main delema: if i connect it from the output on the amp.. will the signal be too high or amperage to high that it will blow out my board?
thanx

close Micing in stereo?
So I'm wondering if there is a preferred method for close Micing in stereo, or if this is commonly done, or if it's a major faux pas.
It seems to me in my reading here and elsewhere that the XY, ORTF, and Bloomingdales configs are usually used for room mics where they are a ways back from the sound source.
