I'm looking for a vocal mic preamp for male rock vocals mainly, and maybe some VO stuff. The main vocal mics I have are MXL 2001, Sennheiser MD421, and an AT4040 (my bass player's actually, but at my disposal). My current sad little pre's are a Mackie VLZ board, an M-Audio DMP3, and an ART TubePac.

Hey guys-

I am slowly but surely getting more and more into home recording. I have recorded in big studios, middle of the road studios, and home studios, and I am beginning to enjoy simple, minimalistic studio techniques (i.e. 4 track cassette, 8 track reel to reel).

I've always been into that sound of vocals that have been doubled. My problem is when my vocals are summed to mono (which most "major label" productions with this technique sound like they are, and most new songs that are popular seem to have done) they sound thin and out of phase. Am i doing something wrong, do they actually need to be panned out more than it seems?

So here's my quandary:

I'm feeding a MOTU Traveller (haha, yes, MOTU is something funny these days, but it serves my needs well) with a twinpack of Eurekas and an ISA220, but since my best mic is a C4000b, I think it's time to add a nice mic to the closet. I need it to excel on vocals (male and female) as well as acoustic guitar.

I'm sort of glad to have found this forum because it deals with the exact subject I've been having ongoing difficulties with for quite some time: recording vocals. It takes me a long time, because I can never get it to sound right, no matter how much I try. I always get a very mid-rangey sound, with a lack of presence.
